Lessons From Making Jace MTG

Copied

Want to learn how a planeswalker for MTG is painted?

"Jace, Ingenious Mind-Mage" for Magic: The Gathering is the subject of this making-of video where I (Clint Cearley) explain the creation process from rough sketches to final image. We'll discuss takeaway lessons that you can apply to your own illustrations and we'll cover things I had to learn for this illustration. Topics we'll go over include:

Posing, lighting the scene, painting foliage, painting falling water, taking reference photos, rendering faces, improving skin tones and painting dappled light. Time is also given to discussing the need to subdivide larger simpler shapes with smaller more interesting ones.
